GIS Day, November 18, 2009, 9:30am – 3:30 pm
Event Location: Civic Center Mall 500 W. Temple St. Los Angeles, CA 90012
Event Summary / Additional Information: Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is the use of spatial or locational data to improve decision-making. GIS Day is part of National Geographic’s’ Geography Awareness Week and falls on November 18 this year.
Much of what we do as individuals and employees depends on knowing where people, places or things are located. Generally speaking, Geography is the science of “where” and it is essential for organizing and addressing issues relating to location. The following, for example, are all geographic questions:
Where is the closest library?
How do I get to that meeting?
Can we build in this location?
Where is the opportunity?
Where might the fire spread?
What is the spatial pattern of crimes committed in this community?
Where is this disease most prevalent and what else do we know about these places?
These spatial questions and endless others (limited only by our imaginations) can be better visualized, understood, analyzed, and acted upon with the aid of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). A GIS helps reveal relationships, patterns and trends in easily understood and shared maps, databases and/or charts. Chances are that you make daily use of GIS products: Google maps, store locators, or your department’s mapping resources, etc.
Come to our free event at the Civic Center Mall to find out more! For more information go to our website: http://gis.lacounty.gov/eGIS/?page_id=1068
I sent you a proposed announcement for the County portal this morning. Just for convenience, however, I’m attaching a copy of our flyer to this email.
Thank you so much,
