101 FREEWAY INTERCHANGE PROPOSED “CAP” PARK

Environmental activists and community planners are proposing placing a two-thirds-mile-long deck (“cap”) across the 101 Freeway in downtown LA to create a 100-acre park which would include an amphitheater, walkways and rolling landscape with a ridge line trail. They also plan for over a million square feet of mixed-use development along the freeway area. Total cost is projected at $700 million. Think of it as the reversal of the Joni Mitchell song lyrics “paving over paradise with a parking lot.”

DLANC votes to support planning of 2010 Downtown CicLAvia event

At the January board meeting, DLANC voted to support the planning of a first-ever CicLAvia event for Downtown. Ciclovía, started in Bogotá, Colombia over thirty years ago as a response to the congestion and pollution of city streets, is coming to Los Angeles and the planning committee is working to get community support of this effort.

CicLAvia creates a park by removing motorized traffic from city streets, and encourages people to come out and carve a new landscape for themselves. The Sustainability Committee and Parks, Recreation & Open Space Committee plan to support this effort in the coming months.
