LOS ANGELES SKYLINE
Los Angeles has one of the largest skylines in the United States. In 1911 the city updated the height limit ordinance to 150' (decorative towers were exempted). The 1911 ordinance was repealed in 1957. The skyline continues to reach upward due to seismic design standards which are highly earthquake-resistant. The U.S. Bank Tower is now the tallest building in the U.S. West of the Mississippi river.
Bike Lanes Coming to Main Street!
The City of LA is getting ready to implement bike lanes along Main Street spanning from 9th Street to 16th Street/Venice Blvd. This will extend the new southbound bike lane on Spring Street (north of 9th) and connect to a future northbound bike lane on Main from 9th to Cesar Chavez.
Part of a larger project to connect South LA to Downtown & Northeast LA, this 0.7 mile project will connect to the 1.5 mile bike lane on Spring, creating a 2.2 mile continuous bike facility linking the following neighborhoods:
• Fashion District
• Historic Core
• Civic Center
• El Pueblo
• Chinatown
Bike Lane Benefits:
The bike lanes will make Main Street safer for people driving, bicycling, and walking and support healthy lifestyles, as the City will remove a southbound travel lane to create space for bike lanes.
Other benefits of this project include:
• No loss of on-street parking or loading zones
• Will not significantly reduce vehicle travel time
• Better access to businesses, jobs and other destinations along Main Street by people walking and biking
• More room on sidewalks for pedestrians because bicyclists will be using bike lanes
• More trips by bike and walking leads to less congestion
Fact In the last five years along Main Street in the Fashion District there have been 20 collisions involving vehicles with pedestrians or bikes: 12 vehicle/pedestrian collisions; and 8 vehicle/bike collisions.
